Name Details
Jeff Pace

From Peter Bull

Fellow Members of the Ex-OTC Fraternity,

Mick Ward rang Dave Neyle yesterday to give an update on Jeff Pace’s health. Jeff worked in the Data Centre at Broadway for a while but Mick advised me that he spent most of his years in OTC in Head Office in Elizabeth Street, Sydney.

For those of you who are not aware, Jeff was diagnosed with a brain tumour last year (ironically enough, at the same time as Kevin Huby’s death from the same problem). Jeff has been going through the usual radio and chemotherapy, however Mick says he has had a bit of a turn for the worse, but is receiving physiotherapy and occupational therapy and can again talk and recognise friends and family. Of course, everyone remains hopeful that he will regain his health.

Mick and Dave thought that some of you would perhaps welcome an opportunity to say “hello” to Jeff, or at least keep him in your thoughts during these troubled times. Jeff is currently at the Sacred Heart Hospice, which is part of St Vincents Hospital in Darlinghurst.

Mick can be contacted on 0418-249116, or at e-mail MWard@primustel.com.au if you want further details.

Mick Ward rang me this morning to give an update on Jeff Pace’s health.

Jeff was an integral member of our clan, and Mick and I thought that many of you would perhaps welcome an opportunity to say “hello” to Jeff, or at least keep him in your thoughts during these troubled times. Jeff is currently at the Sacred Heart Hospice, which is part of St Vincents Hospital in Darlinghurst.

Jim Anderson

This information is courtesy of Trevor Thatcher who sends his best wishes to all.

Des Woods of Kingscliff that our well known and respected colleague, Jim Anderson (aka "Ando") of SOR and Telex fame, is currently a patient in the Nepean Hospital which is located at the corner of Parker & Derby Streets, Penrith, 2750. Telephone: (02) 4734 2000

Jim has been in hospital for some weeks undergoing heart bypass surgery and heart valve repair/replacement. Jim’s son, James, advised Des today that Jim has not lost his sense of humour and is expected to be in hospital for a further month. For those who would wish to visit Jim, he is in Ward 5B, Bed 2.

Peter Grove

In brief, Peter went into hospital in July to address a staph infection. The doctors removed his artificial hip that he has inserted 3 years ago which was the cause of the staph infection. He has been in and out of hospital ever since and is back again for a final (hopefully) stint. He is bored shitless and would appreciate some visitors or a phone call or two to relieve the boredom. Having said that he is positive in spirit and is hoping to be out of hospital soon.

Pete’s latest at Norwest – mid Sept 2010

Greetings all,
This is the latest from my 2nd and latest trip to Norwest Private Hospital – if indeed you still have an interest.

You may be aware that I went into Norwest 19th July and had three operations to remove a Staph infection that had manifested around the scar of my replacement right hip operation of three years ago.

After three operations to get rid of the infection, I finally went home a month later on 19th August. I had been home nearly two weeks, and the infection was looking like it had cleared up. The Homecare nurse was coming around to inspect George the gunk collector and change the wound dressing a few times a week. Then the leg seized up again on 1st Sept, and back to hospital within the hour; and back on various drugs, pills and potions.

I had a 150 hour operation on Friday Friday 3rd Sept to remove the hip, and hopefully all of the residue of the infection. Then followed three agony days and nights to try to stabilise leg after the operation, just laying on my back the whole time. Even lots of morphine and Valium didn’t have much effect on the pain. The following Monday afternoon very gingerly got up onto a Zimmer frame with forearm weight support/rests and uprights to try to get some back relief, and to try to learn to walk - again.

Painful and didn’t last long, but was able to spend an hour in my orthopaedic chair to try to stretch my legs and get some back relief. Spent more time walking Tuesday and Wednesday. Started to walk 20 meters and return, as long as George came with me. Waiting on doctors and x-ray results. X-ray revealed the metal spacer in my hip. It seems to be doing its temporary job. Funny not having a hip. And it effects my unpredictable dicky right knee. From Thursday to now Monday have been using my underarm wooden crutches to practise walking. At most can go 100 meters up and down the corridor. Will continue to practise using my crutches to try to get better. Otherwise spend the days in orthopaedic chair with no Fox Sports on TV; and nights on my back in hospital bed.

The orthopaedic Specialist has been to see me today, Monday 13th Sept, and inspected the now dry wound, and looked at the blood and other tests.
Could be outta here by mid to late next week. Say about Thursday 23rd Sept. But it depends on how good my body is fighting the infection good fight.
I seem to be able to cope with the infection using Phred the IV drip and lots of Vancomycin, but not so good with just oral antibiotics.

Anyway, I would be home for 4 to 8 weeks. Would use crutches, wheelchair, and maybe just a walking stick if I am able to do so at home. Obviously if I go out would mainly use the wheelchair just to be on the safe side.

It is frustrating because I am just marking time. When I finally come back to Norwest to get a “normal” hip replacement that will be different. Be at Norwest 4 to 7 days after the replacement hip insertion operation (op # 5 since mid July) and then off to the rehab hospital for 10 days or so to learn to walk again properly, and use the hydrotherapy pool. But don’t know when op # 5 will happen. Would hopefully have it all done – including some recovery - by Xmas.
Will be in contact again next week with hopefully going home news, if you manage to stay awake to read it.

Regards,
Peter Grove

PS - Dry July has become The August of Abstinence which became Sober September. What will October be called?

Gareth Thompson

3/6/10 - One of the old SOR mob, Gareth Thompson has had a brain aneurysm diagnosed and is currently in a residential care unit @ BUPA, 26 Pacific Hway, Roseville NSW 2069. I'm sure he would welcome old friends and workmates visits, correspondence etc.

From Bob Emanuel - "Gareth was one of the Chief Operators (CHOP) at the Broadway International Telex Operating Room - INTLX - when Telex was king, 1975 to 1987, before Fax took over for text communications, then X.25 and finally the Internet. In those days, Telex bearers were restored before voice bearers because they generated more revenue. One voice channel would have 24 switched telex bearers, in total generating more revenue than one voice call. I worked closely with the CHOPs and knew Gareth as an excellent chap, full of integrity and a decent honest man, along with Stuie Taylor and Jimmy Anderson, both well known to and well liked and respected by members of OTVA.

From: Geof McDonald - Gareth Thompson is someone I have known for a large proportion of my life. Gareth and his wife Vere were my escorts when I left Perth in about October 1955 to join my parents (George and Dorrie McDonald) on Fanning Island and as I was only fifteen at the time I wasn’t allowed to travel by myself. We left Perth in October 1955 by rail, We then waited for our ship to arrive and then proceeded to Fanning via Lautoka , Suva, Apia and then onto Fanning. We arrived there on the 28th December 1955. Gareth took on big responsibility in being my official escort as I have stated I was only fifteen at the time. I later renewed my friendship with Gareth when I worked for O.T.C. in Sydney and again when I was posted to Fanning . Gareth was one of the few operators who did multiple trips to Fanning while I was the only one who went there as a child and returned to work there. I just wish to publicly acknowledge my debt to Gareth and I wish him well and hope that he makes a full recovery.
