Les Ayers advised
Alf Cannell passed away during the night.   His wife rang me this morning to advise.  I spoke to his son in law Richard and he advised me that no arrangements had been made as yet.  He will ring me as soon as something is formulated.
Regards to all for now

    Les Ayers updated:
Alf had been in Liverpool Hospital for a while with circulation problems.

Alf ended his career in OTC as an Area Controller in the SOR.

Alf had come from the UK – He had quite a history of telegraphy service though as a wireless operator, etc. During WWII he was on Atlantic convoy escort duty in the merchant navy and also with service in Asian waters. After WWII he was a Radio Operator on the coastal shipping service in Australia/NZ. From there he went to DCA before finally being given the opportunity to join OTC circa ’51/52.

    He retired in the 80s.

    From Jim Simpson:
Whilst I do indeed recall ‘Alfie’ as a cheerful, cheeky Pom during my time in the SOR (from Jan 1959 to the late 60’s), we lost touch as our ways parted & I moved firstly (as a Telegraphist/Operator) to the Intl Gateway Exchange at Paddington (Intelx) and in later years (as a Marketing Officer) into the commercial/marketing areas of OTC.

Nevertheless, I do have good memories of Alfie’s good humour, quick wit & work ethic – he was always good company to be around.
